Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss, author and illustrator of 44 children's books, was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. Dr. Seuss studied English at Oxford University in England and worked as a writer and cartoonist at various magazines before writing first children's book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.” Boredom on a long boat trip to the U.S. inspired Dr. Seuss to write the book as a poem to the rhythm of the ship's engine. It was published in 1937 after being rejected by the first 27 publishers he sent it to. Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat, first published in 1957, became a best-selling, popular series that combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Dr. Seuss was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and took home three Academy Awards. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

"We throw in as many fresh words as we can get away with. Simple, short sentences don't always work. You have to do tricks with pacing, alternate long sentences with short, to keep it alive and vital. Virtually every page is a cliff-hanger--you've got to force them to turn it." Dr. Seuss

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.
