Information about Mark Twain

Mark Twain
Mark Twain

Mark Twain, American author and humorist, was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Clemons grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for his most noted novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. At age 13, Samuel left school to become a printer's apprentice and two years later joined his brother’s newspaper as a printer and editorial assistant. It was here that Samuel found he enjoyed writing. Twain later switched professions, realizing an old boyhood dream of becoming a river pilot. But writing kept calling to him and he started to gain a following as a small town journalist using the pseudonym Mark Twain, a nautical term meaning “two fathoms,” from his riverboat pilot days. Twain wrote 28 books and numerous short stories, letters and sketches before his death on April 21, 1910 in his home near Redding, Connecticut.
