Information about William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare, regarded as one of the greatest English poets and playwrights, was born April 26, 1554 in Stratford in Avon near London, England. He was educated at the free grammar school where he learned to look beyond the mechanics of language to the beauty of literature. Most of Shakespeare’s 38 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as a variety of other poems, were written between 1586 and 1616. He is among the very few playwrights who have excelled in both tragedy and comedy. He is considered to be England's national poet and is sometimes referred to as the "Bard of Avon" or simply "The Bard.” Already a successful actor and popular writer in his own lifetime, Shakespeare's reputation became increasingly celebrated after his death. Shakespeare's works have been translated into every major living language and his plays continue to be performed throughout the world. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 in Stratford on his 52nd birthday.

Perhaps the most famous tragic romance of all time, Romeo and Juliet is chock full of emotions and romantic ideas. Here Juliet argues against Romeo's name (Montague, and being perpetually at war with Juliet's family, the Capulets). His name matters nothing to her, she wishes only to be with him and for their love to not be defined by their names.
